So this is my first attempt at a digital painting. A little background for the painting - I couldn't afford the best digital tablet, so I got the one just under it, a Wacom Bamboo, and I found it to be quite a nice tool. Second, I don't yet have the program I want to paint with (Photoshop), so to practice, I found a free painting program called Mypaint. It's a very, very basic program, but it gives me the chance to practice with my digital tablet while I'm waiting for PS. Anyway, I thought I owed everyone a chance to see what I've been working on.

The actual painting is a bit bigger than this, and you should be able to click on the picture once or twice to see the actual size.

- Caleb

"Mourning. It isn't any one sound, but instead one giant improvisational sound experiment from the cacophony during the day to the subtle murmurs at night. Buenos Aires sounds something like this:

The sun rises to the the rumbling collectivos and whistles of the police cars,
beeping taxis and braking trucks,
cumbia music shooting out of the speakers in the mercado,
the chatter of the Chinese as they ring up your purchases.
thundering subway trains,
cell-phone ring tones,
blind musicians singing for their pesos.

Evening arrives and the city voice shifts to
squawking pigeons positioning for the perfect roost,
the fever-pitched tenor of the football announcer,
the thud of a soccer ball hitting the cement wall.

The footfalls on pavement,
the rattle of metal doors as restaurants reopen,
the clink of glasses of Malbec,
the sizzle as asado is flipped on the hot parrilla grill,
and the crooning of Carlos Gardel from a 2nd story Tango hall.

Night,
where laughter escapes an apartment get-together
shutters closing
clubs opening
dogs barking

And finally the quiet hum of a tired city,
and the soft crack of laundry drying in the wind.Caleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-33687214416210226332011-09-01T11:35:00.001-07:002011-09-01T22:02:03.811-07:00Graffiti Paradise
A couple days ago I had the chance to go on a tour of a couple of neighborhoods in Buenos Aires in search of the best street art. Street art, graffiti, tagging, whatever you call it, has a long tradition in Latin America, and over the last decade Buenos Aires has become the canvas of many artists, both local, and from all over the world.

The government here quickly realized that it was better to promote street art, rather than criminalize it, and thus force people into other shady dealings in the dark of night. Therefore, for those pieces that are found to be of exceptional quality, the art is allowed to stand for quite awhile - years in some cases.

I haven't had a chance to see all of the art in BA - that would take years - but here is a sampling of some of the art that struck me most.

This artist goes by JAZ, and is a graffiti legend. In this piece he says (via interview) he was attempting to understand the monster within combative sports.
This one is by ICE.

The next four are by the Triangulo Dorado, or Golden Triangle. They tend to concentrate on metaphysical works, and often incorporate gold into their pictures, something inspired by works by Gustav Klimt. The first three are part of a three mural piece (a triptych) called "Titian's Dream", or "El Sueno del Titian".

I really love how this strange antlered animal is manipulating some machine that controls the city and creatures within. Bizarre, yet interesting.
I'll post more art as I come across it. And I'm also going to try to meet some of these artists on their own turf. Stay tuned for that.

The past days are a bit of a blur...

There was a lady singing tango ballads in a smoky bar with walls that rose twenty feet high, stacked with thousands of old, dusty bottles of wine...

There was a rocket made of light that stood hundreds of feet high...

There was a roadtrip that stranded us while a horse grazed in the middle of the road, barring our way...

The was a fire on the ceiling of an apartment...

There was maté, and music, and Fernet, and smiles...

There was wandering into a warehouse where an Oscar-winner performed guitar to modern tango and electronica...

There was a grill the size of a volkswagon that bent under the weight of the cooking carne...

There were drinks on the steps of a palace...

There was liquid steel being thrown onto the side of a wall, set to music...

There was a parade of glowing landstriders reimagined from Jim Henson´s The Dark Crystal...

There was, in between, sleep.

And after around 36 hours of cars, planes, buses, ferries, and subways, I´m certain that if I ever have the extra cash for a direct flight, I´ll jump on that.

The day, Friday, started out with both unexpected smoothness, and perhaps a bad omen. After a wake-up at 5AM, my brother-in-law and I took off for JFK airport. Yet somehow we made it there with perhaps the best traffic either of us had ever seen in the New York area. Strange indeed. Yet during the car ride, I noticed that I seemed to have a number of bug bites on my forearm. It itched, but that´s sometimes what happens when you´ve been sleeping in a basement - unexpected bites.

I easily made my plane and had the odd seating assignment next to a man who looked like the Hispanic Barack Obama. No lie. Ears and all. We chatted on the way to my first layover in El Salvador. A note for anyone worried about El Sal: Most of the dangers in El Sal are in San Salvador, but the airport is way outside of the city in the countryside. So if you wanted to fly into El Sal, you could then simply bypass San Sal, and travel onward to any number of incredible beaches, volcanos, and the like.

My next flight to Lima, Peru was trouble free, and the flights were ontime. I´ve used the Lima airport before, and it was as modern, clean, and easy to get around as always.

My next flight(s) were to Asuncion, Paraguay, and then finally to Montevideo, Uruguay. These were the best flights, as a friendly Uruguayian and I drank Johnny Walker Red and swapped stories until the wee hours of the morning.

I breezed through customs the fastest I´ve ever made it through customs, probably helped by the time, as it was 5:45Am. When I stepped out of the airport into the dark morning, I only knew I had to somehow make it to a bus station called Tres Cruces, where I was to catch a bus to the colonial port city of Colonia. From there I had already booked a spot on a ferry that would take me to Buenos Aires.

The problem, however, was that it was 5:45, and my bus wasn´t supposed to leave until 1PM. And there was an unholy cold spell that had settled over the country which I was not particularly interested in sitting through for the next 8 hours.

So, there I was, outside the Montevideo airport, asking for directions to Tres Cruces, when I was told by some men to join them on the next bus that they said was headed toward Tres Cruces. I double-checked this info with the airport information desk, and then decided to take the bus.

As the bus pulled away from the airport, I grew worried when I saw that one of the men had a gun. And as I looked around, I realized that most everyone on the bus carried a gun. Now, although I´m a seasoned traveler, this sort of thing can cause concern. But I quickly learned that these were all off-duty airport security officers, and they turned out to be incredibly kind and generous, sharing Mate (a local tea that Uruguayians and Argentines are obsessed with), givng me weather reports from their iPhones, advice on where to go, what to eat, etc,. I soon realized that this was perhaps the safest, most affiable bus in the entire country.

One of the men - Carlaim, a man so short he could have nearly been a dwarf - even took it upon himself to accompany me to the bus station to make sure I found everything ok. When we got there, he convinced the ticket office to upgrade me to the bus that was leaving right then for the ferry, instead of waiting the 8 hours. Nothing was expected from his generosity. It was just the way of the people there, as I was explained.

I arrived in Colonia and set to boarding the ferry, only to find out I had somehow lost my immigration card. Chalk it up to getting almost no sleep for a day and a half, or whatever, but this was a problem. You don´t easily leave a country without that card. So, as the rest of the passengers filed onto the ferry, I was left alone in the customs hall, frantically searching my things for this damn card. As it always happens, I found it in the last place I expected to find it, and as the custom officials chuckled, I was allowed to leave Uruguay.

The ferry was fast and direct, landing in Buenos Aires in early afternoon. Yet since I had arrived several hours before I was expected by my host, I had to wait a little while in the port - which is no bad thing with all the delicious cakes, cookies, and cappicinos all around me in the luxerious port.

This festival of food was broken, however, when upon a bathroom break I realized I was having an allergic reaction to the insect bites. And not just my arm was red and itching, but the skin under my left eye was all swollen and red. It is quite a way to make a first impression on your host, let me tell you.

But Portenos(this is what people from Buenos Aires call themselves) are rather unflappable, and my host, Melina, was no exception. And soon, half red-faced and all, I was welcomed to Buenos Aires, and thus my adventure has begun.

I made it clear to them that it needed another edit before it could be sent out, and everyone is fine with that. So now that I have enough time on my hands, I'm preparing to launch into the edit.

Currently I'm in pre-edit mode, one made up mostly of research. Now while I really enjoy research, sometimes it gets a bit grueling. Especially if the subject is of the plague variety. Researching on the internet is like going through the rabbit hole - you never know where it will lead. And this is certainly the case when you start googling about blood and sacrifices and the like. You start to get blood on the brain. I toggle between pages about the Ebola and Lassa virus, read up on ancient cutting practices, search for translations of dead languages on rituals.

Grisly stuff. But at the end of the day, even though I've had had to wade through a great deal of blood, coming up with a finished product is worth it.

Just hope the editors agree. Hah.Caleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-12918065636279478882011-04-04T17:40:00.000-07:002011-04-04T19:26:46.931-07:002011 Retro-BlogAlright, so I have no great excuse for no blogging for awhile. I admit it. SO, to get caught up, I'm going to do a little retro-blog from where I last left off. And after this, I promise I will be much more regular about my postings.

So, what's been going on?

November -- I attended the World Fantasy Convention in Columbus, Ohio, with my friend and fellow writer Dale Carothers. A great time was had by all, especially at the bar and the party rooms. It's amazing the amount of wheeling, dealing, and carousing go on at these events. The discussion panels were cool enough, though at some of the panels there was a little too much self-promotion going on. I mean, really? You're on a friggin panel, stop trying to sell your most recent whatever. But I met a lot of great people - writers, artists, editors, publishers - and will make every effort to attend the Con again in the near future.

Towards the end of November, I flew down to join my family in Tampa where we all embarked on a cruise to Mexico. Cruises are to lazy people what bacon is to meateaters. Room service, housekeeping, pools, spas, restaurants, fine dining, buffets, lobster tails, ice cream sundaes, pizza,... is there a trend here? This was my second cruise in the Carib, and I enjoyed every second of it. Well, every second except that it was too short. The highlights: Incredible Indian food, scuba diving, exploring a Maya city, 24/7 food, and of course family.

And then a return to home and the beginning of the dark days of Winter.

December lowlights: Living in South Dakota. 2 blizzards. A low of -45. 1 flat tire.

Highlights? My story 'To Sleep With Pachamama' was bought by Bart Leib for an upcoming anthology called Subversion. I started reading slush for John Joseph Adam's Lightspeed Magazine. And most promising - a request from EDGE Publishing to see more chapters of my novel Denizen's Ascension.

January arrived with all the grace of a 800-Ib brick of ice. It didn't take long to make the decision to flee SD. Where would I go? TBD. All I knew was that I had to get out of there. So all that had to be done was sell, give away, or toss just about everything I had. Easier said than done.

In the midst of this somewhere I sold my story 'The Last Days of Humberto Guerra' to Bill Tucker's upcoming anthology Zombies Without Borders.

March arrived and I was homeless, truckless, unemployed, and a great deal more excited about the future. It's not often that can be said. But I was leaving SD and knew great things were ahead of me. I will not miss much of SD, though I will miss my friends. Luckily, the world has given us cell phones, email, Skype, and blogs to make things easier.

I quickly jumped from Sioux Falls to Omaha (shout out to the Indian joint downtown!) to Wisconsin where I met up with great old friends. Hospitality is always in fine form at the home of Jamie and Len Davis. Didn't get to see everyone I hoped to, but that's the nature of things.

Post-WI, I fled the North for the warm winds of Florida to spend great times with family.

And now as I type is the beginning of April. What comes ahead I don't know, but I'm excited to find out. AND, I promise to blog about it.

- CalebCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-17510204264921580272010-10-19T14:06:00.000-07:002010-11-12T14:14:03.817-08:00Short-listedJust received word that my story 'Child of Viracocha' has been short-listed for "Beware The Night', an upcoming anthology published by Prime Books, and edited by Ekaterina Sedia - an award-winning writer and editor.

Now, for those who don't know what short-listed means, it essentially means that out of the hundreds (sometimes thousands) of story submissions, my story has been set aside in a much smaller group out of which the final stories will be selected. It's kind of like trying out for a professional sports team and out of hundreds of people, you make the temporary 25-person squad. But this squad will be re-looked at and then cut down to 10.

I suppose, continuing the analogy, this means that if I don't make the cut, I'd be heading to a D-league or triple AAA.

Either way, it's nice to be recognized and considered for this anthology.

- CCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-30650273547356646822010-10-12T14:02:00.000-07:002010-11-12T14:06:39.519-08:00CG - Year 2

This just announced: My story 'The Vanishing Sea' has been picked to be included in Crossed Genres Best of 2010. It's free to read online though I'd suggest choosing the free PDF version since the layout is quite nice.

Here's a link to the PDF.

Or you can go to the Innsmouth Free Press homepage.

For those interested in lighter fare, my story 'The Vnimajici' should be available to read in a few weeks. Rejection letters. Writer's block. A magazine goes under. An agent doesn't even bother to send you a rejection letter. Buying expensive toner cartridges. Having to work another job and then muster the energy to write when you come home. Etc.

But nothing is worse than the waiting. I think that is the biggest reason a lot of writers give up - they simply can't deal with the waiting. I'll give an example.

I submitted a story to a magazine and began the waiting process. About three months later they notified me that the story had made it through the first round of readings by their editor. They said I would be notified if I made the final cut. Four months passed and then I received another notice that the story had made it to the final 20 out of which they would choose 12 for their magazine. Two more months passed before they sent me an email that my story was not selected.

Sure, I was bummed. It would've been a good zine to get into. But mostly I hated that it had taken 9 months to essentially get a 'no'. I took the rejection in stride (albeit with a smattering of curse words), and submitted it to another magazine. This time it took 3 months before the editor of that magazine emailed me requesting some changes to the story. I completed the changes over the weekend and sent it to him. 3 months passed. Then I get the email saying he bought it.

Elation. Relief. Accomplishment. Validation. Et al.

But this is what I'm getting at - it took 15 months of straight waiting just to get the opinions of 2 editors. Now, I was lucky on the second editor, and the story was published. Yet for many other stories the wait can be almost endless. It's a crapshoot really, finding the right editor that sees something special in your story.

Here's another couple issues to deal with while waiting. It just happened to a writing friend of mine. He had one editor say the story was too short for the scope of the plot. Right after that, a different editor thought the story was too long.

You can just imagine the head aches. But when the sale happens, it makes it all worth it. And I've got a lifetime of waiting ahead of me. Just off the top of my head, I can think of one story that was shortlisted for a book anthology, but I won't know til around December if they will buy the story. This is a story that I sent them in December 2009. You might ask - really, it takes them a year to make a decision? Apparently so.

The only cure for the disease of waiting is keeping busy. That's it. Nothing else. So I push on. Been researching for a new story, The Ghon. Had 3 new book ideas recently, so I'm making notes as they happen upon me. Gearing up to do the final edit for another book, Atocongo Bridge, about street kids in Peru.

Anything to help me forget about the waiting.

- CCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-5010172974312178622010-05-15T17:03:00.000-07:002010-05-15T17:17:49.168-07:00Publishing Date MovedI was getting kinda worried recently because my story, 'The Vnimajici', was set to appear in issue 58 of Ray Gun Revival, but they seemed frozen on issue 55. Then I had read on another website that the magazine was on hiatus. Hiatus in the magazine world is like being caught just past the event horizon around a black hole: gone, and never to be heard from again.

So I sent them an email hoping this hiatus was a mistake.

Turns out they are reformatting how they publish stories and have decided to move my story up into the next issue #56, set to come out in June. Relief.

Sometimes stories can be hard to place. You have to find the right magazine, the right editor, the right themed issue. I knew selling The Vnimajici would be tough because:

1) It has an ethnic theme. A lot of magazines say they are interested in ethnic stories, but then when you look at the stories they publish, there's often nary an ethnic story to be found.

2) It is lighthearted. A lot of zines like hard, serious SF. This one isn't. It has that lighthearted humor that you might find in an episode of Doctor Who.

3) It has robots. Unlike a lot of stories where authors are going out of their way to reinvent the wheel concerning robots, this one isn't like that. This is more of a throwback to old scifi where a robot was a robot and the emphasis was placed on the story.

So you can see why I didn't want to restart the process of shopping this story around. Thankfully I don't have to and soon readers will have a chance to enjoy The Vnimajici.

Cheers,

- CCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-80649592059523252312010-05-14T16:59:00.000-07:002010-05-15T17:03:51.022-07:00Changing blogging quotaLately I've been pretty bad about keeping up with blogging. I'm sure it has something to do with lack of anything going on that I feel anyone will be interested in. But I may be wrong. Either way, I've decided I will try to blog something new every day or so. Just to force myself to keep active. We'll see how it goes.

- CCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-64414894538617188102010-03-22T14:27:00.001-07:002010-03-22T14:40:21.971-07:00Dale Carothers' Bright Wings In The Ebony HallGot word today that my friend, Dale Carothers, had one of his stories ('Bright Wings In The Ebony Hall' - published in Electric Spec Magazine) nominated for The Harper Pen Award 2009. This is great news for him, but also for me, as I edited this story.

This is another reminder that our edits, rewrites, ideas, and committment are paying off. It takes a long time to make headway in such a huge industry as publishing, but when it happens, it feels fantastic.

Congrats to Dale.

- Cheers
CalebCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-90453671012265648552010-03-14T14:20:00.000-07:002010-03-22T14:26:17.119-07:00GonzaloReceived word recently that my story 'Gonzalo's Luisa' has been shortlisted for the book anthology Fire & Ice. It's not a sale, but it essentially means the story has made it to a short list from where the final published works will be selected. This is great news for me because I knew when I wrote the story that it would have difficulty finding a home. It's written in the magical realism vein, and though some magazines will consider MR among other fantasy submissions, this story has an element of romance to it that I'm sure some magazines will shy away from. So, I keep my fingers crossed.

Cheers,

CalebCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-70288405802289938722010-03-01T14:15:00.000-08:002010-03-22T14:20:21.802-07:00NominatedI'm happy to announce that my story, '8 Minutes', previously published in Atomjack Magazine, has been nominated for the Million Writers Award - an award presented to the best short stories published online in 2009.

There are loads of other great stories nominated, so I'm not holding my breath for a win, but it's nice to be recognized.

Cheers,

CalebCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17866544.post-68120892493523766552010-01-20T15:46:00.000-08:002010-01-20T15:55:01.954-08:00The VnimajiciJust a quick post to announce another sale. My story, 'The Vnimajici', will appear in Ray Gun Revival, Issue 58. As of right now, this will be published sometime in April. 'The Vnimajici' is a lighthearted throwback to the golden age of science fiction. Think Bradbury joining forces with Dr. Who.

I'll post a link when the issue is available.

Cheers!

- CCaleb Jordan Schulzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081413306205816847noreply@blogger.com1
